San Antonio is the largest Maya Village in Toledo. Thatched huts are spread across the village high and low with tangled vegetation in between. San Antonio was established by immigrants who fled across the Guatemala border in 1883 from San Luis, Peten in order to avoid persecution. The villagers’ main occupations are farming, raising livestock, hunting and fishing. Bush-Doctor’s today still treat snakebites with medicinal plants and herbs, as they have for generations. Two hundred million years ago, seeping rainwater in underground rivers began to carve out the Toledo Cave System. In ancient Maya culture, actuns (caves) served as portals between the surface world of the humans and the underworld of the gods, called Xibalba.

Oke’bal Ha lead you on a journey through time. Echoes from distant walls play with one’s sense of time and space. Thousand-year-old artifacts of Maya shamans still sit in some of the Caves, as if waiting for the next ritual. Feel the cool breezes from deep within the earth suggest the presence of ghosts. Your guide will take you after the visit of the village of San Antonio/ Santa Cruz on a hike through “high Bush” and secondary growth jungle and across crystal clear streams to reach a most remote and beautiful spot where you can explore the Oke’bal Ha Cave with marvelous formations where the Rio Blanco River disappear.

In the jungle of southern Belize you can see a rich variety of ferns, heliconia and shade loving palms such as the broom,‘give and take’, and bay leaf palm flourish under the tall canopy provided by giant forest trees along the way before heading back for a picnic lunch and a soothing water massage in the Rio Blanco River. We leave San Antonio/Santa Cruz as the sun moves behind the hills, heading homeward through the village of Mafredi, and back to the Southern Highway to the return journey to Punta Gorda.
