Jungle and Adventure

The old Mayan trail leading up from Blue Creek to Santa Cruz has been used for decades as a go between for the two villages. The undulating trail will lead us to a beautiful and spectacular waterfall, whose flat ledges the river cascades over the deep pool below. This is the perfect place for a swim and  sunbathe, on the island of smooth flat rocks that have formed in the middle of the pool.

Jungle Hike from Blue Creek to Santa Cruz

08:30 am to 04:30 pm, from Punta Gorda Town

The old Mayan trail leading up from Blue Creek to Santa Cruz has been used for decades as a go between for the two villages. In recent years however, it has been hugely overgrown and therefore unusable. During the re-cutting of the trail there were several sightings of fresh jaguar prints in the moist soil in between
the two villages. Snakes, Lizards and tree frogs have also been spotted along with some of the most beautiful birds and butterflies that can be found in Belize.

This exciting and varied wildlife, coupled with the trail’s breathtaking views, lost waterfalls and caves, placed the trail as one of the rarest and most poignant journeys that the jungle can offer. Untouched by tourism it shows off the very essence of the jungle itself surrounded on all sides by some of the most beautiful, lush green jungle that is to be seen in the world. The trail begins just past on the bank of Blue Creek Azure River and follows it’s underwater channels into the heart of the mountains. Easy going and quite narrow to begin with canopied by the overhanging palm trees, silver wood and cohune palms that shadow the path even in the heat of the day.

Later on a turn takes you through the first part of the jungle’s uneven terrain. The path will get a little rockier and you find yourself meandering along the
dry river bed. This soon leads you to the first of the trail’s steep climbs. The white rocks are patchy with green moss, their jagged edges providing good footholds. Trees grow up through the rocks searching for the light. Once at the top there is a clear view of the mountains, you can look out across the jungle for miles. The undulating trail soon arrives at a beautiful and spectacular waterfall, whose flat ledges the river cascades over the deep pool below. This is the perfect place for a swim and sunbathe, on the island of smooth flat rocks that have formed in the middle of the pool. Everything is so quiet and serene, protected somehow from the surrounding jungle by the huge trees that mask it from the shadows.
